Music Salad

Lets be honest, I'm not that big on salad. Sure I'll eat it if its there, but I don't spend my days actively seeking out salad to get involved with. However, salad is good for describing my musical interests, as salad tends to involve a fair few different varieties of vegetable/fruit/whathaveyou. So lets get on with it.

My name is Will, I'm twenty years old, I'm in my third year at Auckland University and I can quite confidentally say music is at the forefront of my thoughts every hour of every day. Great. I was raised as a classical performer on violin and piano from the age of four, and nearly a decade later when I got to high school I began to learn the bagpipes. No, seriously. I don't know what I was thinking either. However, if you ask me now I'll tell you I find bagpipe music to be incredibly moving, and if I had to ride in to battle on a trusty steed I sure would love a rousing bagpipe tune to be playing along during the charge. However, upon reaching university these instruments took a bit of a back seat when I discovered the guitar, and the guitar then took a backseat itself at the beginning of 08 when I became a drummer out of necessity (the band I was playing in at the time had three guitarists and a bassist, and absolutely no percussion).

Since beginning to play the drums my musical career has undergone a fairly radical change. I played my first live gig at the end of 08 in a wee bar on the main street in Thames, and this year I began to play shows on a fairly regular basis around Auckland, mostly on K Road. I have been fortunate enough to play with a lot of great musicians in several amazing bands, and in doing so I have become acquainted with a slice of Auckland music that isn't so well known to a lot of people. As this blog trundles on through time I'll be letting you know all about some great local gigs as they occur, as well as some of the jaw-dropping international acts that are set to arrive in New Zealand next year. I listen to every genre of music I can get my hands on, and I'll be aiming to talk about a whole host of bands and musicians, some that you will have heard of and some you never knew existed, in the hopes that at least one person who happens across this blog will get put on to some new music that will affect their life in a positive way, because thats a big part of what music is all about. Are you excited? You might be eventually, who knows. I know I kind of am at the moment.
